Joe was born in Managua, Nicaragua, the oldest son of economist Anibal Gutierrez and cook Ignacia Cano. He moved with his family to Los Angeles, California in 1985.

Tere was born in San Pedro de Lóvago, in the Chontales Department of Nicaragua, the oldest child of Ramón Humberto González and Marlene Socorro González.

We met after Joe saw a Facebook post of his aunt Janet congratulating Tere for her birthday. Joe asked his aunt if she could connect us and shortly after, we started chatting. First, it was just casual chats which then grew to more deep conversations as we discovered we had a lot in common.
August 15, 2017
Joe and Tere first met in person on August 15, 2017. Joe had arrived in Nicaragua the previous day, having traveled there to meet her. This was one of our first photos taken together, at cafe Molino in Managua, near Tere’s home.

I proposed to Tere in Big Bear Lake, California and she said “Yes!”
